9 Tips on how to store wine at home

Storing wine properly is essential to protect and preserve its quality, flavor, and aroma. If you’re a wine lover, you know that certain wines can be a considerable investment and have unique aging potential that must be respected. Thus, we highly recommend following these helpful tips for the best way to store wine:

Firstly, temperature plays a significant role in wine aging and should be kept between 45-65°F (7-18°C). You should avoid exposing your wine to extreme temperatures or swift temperature fluctuations. Extreme temperatures can cause the delicate chemical compounds that give wine its flavor and aroma profile to break down, resulting in a loss of the wine’s character, bouquet and ultimately its quality. Furthermore, high temperatures can compromise the corks integrity.

Secondly, maintaining humidity levels around 70% is essential to keep the cork moist and prevent it from drying out. A dry cork could allow air to enter the bottle and spoil the wine.

Thirdly, it’s vital to store wine in a dark place to protect it from UV light that can damage the wine’s quality. Exposing wine to UV light can initiate chemical reactions in wine, resulting in undesirable changes in flavor, aroma and color. UV light can also accelerate the aging proces leaving you with a wine that tastes overly mature.

The fourth tip suggests that you keep bottles on their side to keep the cork moist and prevent it from drying out, allowing the air to enter the bottle.

Next, minimizing vibrations is the fifth tip that can disturb the aging process. Constant vibration can prevent the wine from aging in a consistent manner. Wine needs to be still to age effectively.  Many wines also develop sediment that settles on the bottom of the bottle. Vibrations can cause the sediment to mix back into the wine. This can result in cloudy wine, affecting both the appearance and taste.

Sixth, to prevent mold and unwanted odors from affecting the wine, you should ensure good ventilation.

Seventh, we recommend investing in a wine rack or cellar to store your wine bottles properly for easy access and organization. A proper wine rack will also minimize vibrations affecting the aging process.

Eighthly, different wines have varying aging potential, so research the ideal aging conditions for the specific wines you have.

Lastly, consider the intended aging period; not all wines benefit from long-term aging. By following these guidelines, you can store wine effectively and enjoy it at its best when the time comes to open a bottle.

Cheers!
